This evening, I had a long discussion with a newly married couple, and my parting words for the bride were:
“In a secular world where morality is relative, there’s nothing that marriage offers that one cannot get out without it. A partner? Sexual intercourse? Children? Name it. In such a world, the man doesn’t need marital commitments to have all of these.
With his money, he is guaranteed whatever he craves. So, if he now says, come and live with me. I will give you shelter, food, clothing, and take care of your needs to the best of my ability, he deserves something special from you that only marriage can give him. Something that his money may not earn him. Respect. Obedience. Peace of mind. He has earned it all by virtue of providing comfort for you. You have to be intentional about repaying his kindness with obedience, respect, and giving him peace. That is the ultimate Return On Investment for him as a man. The day he wakes up and realizes that his investment isn’t yielding the desired return is the day you hand him the reason to tear up the contract and never look back again.”
